Review: “Elena And The Secret Of Avalor” DVD

“Elena and the Secret of Avalor” brings together the two Disney TV princesses in a magical tale that answers the questions of how Elena was frozen in Sofia’s magic amulet, how was she set free, and what is the connection between “Sofia the First” and “Elena of Avalor.”

After learning about the princess imprisoned in her amulet, Sofia talks her family into visiting the kingdom of Avalor for their summer vacation. She has ulterior motives. She has to go there to free the princess and return her to her throne.

For the past 41 years, the evil Queen Shuriki has ruled Avalor after killing the king and queen and trapping Elena inside the amulet. Shuriki has ruled like a tyrant, outlawing singing, music and dancing. But there has been no one to stop her. This evil sorceress is powerful.

Sofia embarks on a dangerous mission to free the Crown Princess from the amulet and return her to the throne. With the help of Zuzo, the spirit animal guide, flying jaquins, and Mateo (the wizard-in-training), Sofia faces danger but comes through as always.

And once Elena is free from the amulet, she must now free her remaining family who has been frozen in a magical painting in the castle. Once that is done, Elena and Sofia set out to topple the wicked Shuriki and take control of Avalor once again.

All the magic and fun of “Sofia the First”” combine with all the magic and fun of "Elena of Avalor” in this delightful movie. Also included on the DVD are a music video and several episodes from the “Elena of Avalor” series.

The folks at Disney have included an additional surprise in the DVD box. There is a flying Jaquin mobile. It’s made of sturdy plastic and requires an adult to assemble. Everything is included to make your own flying Jaquin except a pair of scissors. Once assembled, this is a fun little item. By gently tugging at the strings you can make the wings flap like a little marionette. Or it can simply hang down from the hanger included with this mobile.

“Elena and the Secret of Avalor” is a magical story combining two delightful young princesses in a fun movie that explains the background of their storylines and beautifully meshes them together. It’s enjoyable for adults as well as kids.

Aimee Carrero voices Princess Elena and Ariel Winter is the voice of Princess Sofia. Jane Fonda supplies the voice of the evil sorceress/Queen Shiriki.

“Elena and the Secret of Avalor” is now available in stores.
